(so the 1 paragraph bio didn't cut it for ya, huh?)
Tova Katz is a writer, composer, musician, and performer now based in LA after 7 gritty & glorious years in NYC. She obtained her BA in Art & Power: Art and Social Change, with a Minor in Theater, Dance, & Performance Studies at UC Berkeley, where she wrote, directed, and produced her first full length musical Spare Change in 2009. Since premiering at La Mama in 2016, her original dark solo musical comedy See You at the Funeral! - originally directed by the incredible Tricia Brouk - has been an Official Selection of NYC's The ONE Theatre Festival and the Fresh Fruit Festival in 2017, for which she received a Fruitie Award for Outstanding Solo Performance in a Musical or Cabaret in 2018. Since co-founding her independent international queer playwright/performer collective—A Beautiful Desperation—in 2014, Tova has performed her original plays at Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Teatro Circulo and The Duplex, including The Sisters Hysteria, Sanity and Other Myths, When We Said Yes, and When We Said No.
Tova has had the immense opportunity to compose, arrange, and perform original and collaborative work at La Mama's Squirts—an annual inter-generational showcase of queer creators and performers—in 2014 and 2016, and was honored to perform again at Squirts in 2017 with Mieke D and Susana Cook. At Squirts 2016, she composed, choreographed, co-directed, and performed a series of tap dances as percussion to live music in Jordan Martin's &Wilder and continued to develop this work, performing her original tap dance percussion with Martin at Ars Nova Theater's ANT Fest 2016.
Tova was featured in April 2016 as a co-arranger and vocalist in Dane Terry's Another Name in Nightlife at Joe's Pub following her co-arrangement and performance in Terry's Bird in the House at La Mama in April 2015. Tova performed Off Broadway in Max Resto's Zombies: A Musical choreographed by Tricia Brouk at Playwrights Horizons in 2014. She has appeared in the television series SMASH on NBC and A Gifted Man on CBS. Tova enjoyed an incredible five years performing as lyricist, composer, pianist, guitarist, lead vocalist of her band Glittered & Mauled across NYC from 2011-2016, and in May 2017 released her first solo single Not That Much.
Since moving to LA, Tova was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in Justin Sayre’s Sweet Nell Theatre Collective at NAVEL DTLA, as a featured musical performer in Breaker/Broken at Open Space Cafe, and in a staged reading as part of Outfest LA 2019. Tova is a 2018 Inquiry Fellow through the Institute for Jewish Creativity (IJC) and a 2019 Asylum Arts/IJC Reciprocity artist. In the spring of 2019, she performed in Queer Cabaret with The Commons LA. She She is currently in the thick of writing her next play and working on her cabaret-inspired murderous heart-pop album.
